March Snapshot
The rosters have expanded and the Pennant chase is on!
Here is a snapshot of the Leagues with four weeks remaining with the playoffs expected to begin on March 31st, barring any needed tiebreakers:
- The Pennant chase is unfolding in the West the same way it has over the past few years, with the Pulberry Trolleys pulling away and closing in on their 5th consecutive 1st place finish. The pursuit of the wild card is the real race once again and this time three teams are in the hunt with one month to go.
- In the East, Wellington and Braeland City are running neck in neck for top stop, with the Cobourg Redlegs, Brunswick Legends and the suddenly hot Stratford Barons desperately trying to crash the party.
- The Western League put up a little better fight in the second half of February than they did in the first half, winning 41 of the 88 combined games. Still, the East came out on top in interleague play this season, winning 210 of 384 games (.547). Only the Sherburn Tigers (28-20) and Wolseley Unions (26-22) boasted a winning record against their Eastern League counterparts. Among the Eastern League teams, the Stratford Barons put up the best interleague record this year, going 32-16. They were followed by the Embro Suns (28-20).
- At present, no team is on course for a 90+ win season. The closest, no surprise, are the Pulberry Trolleys who are playing at an 89-win clip. The only season thus far to finish with no team reaching the 90-win mark was in 1953-54, where the Trolleys finished first in the West with 88 wins and the Stratford Barons captured top spot in the East with 86. That season saw the Trolleys and Fort Richmond Generals play a tiebreaker to determine the first place and wild card positions in the West. Fort Richmond (87-68) went on to win the United Cup.
- Kingston’s 26-year old 1B Ira Bannatyne (.311/.379/.518, 16 HR, 67 RBI, 46 BB, 8 SB, 141 OPS+, 3.6 WAR) is currently on a 22-game hitting streak that began on February 2nd. He is the first player in over 3 years to surpass the 20-game mark.
- Hespeler’s 31-year old CF Cedric Bristow (.254/.343/.337, 5 HR, 29 RBI, 50 BB, 24 SB, 85 OPS+, 2.0 WAR) is currently leading the United Leagues in stolen bases. The Stars’ lead-off hitter is on track to steal 29 bases. That would surpass the current record of most stolen bases in a season during the 1950’s, held by the retired SS John Medley, who stole 26 bases in 1950-51. If Bristow can reach the 30 stolen bases mark, it will be the first time that many have been stolen since John Medley (again) stole 44 bases in 1947-48.
