2040 SAB Southeast Asia League

Two-time defending Southeast Asia League champ Da Nang absolutely dominated the field again for their fifth straight South Division title and 100+ win season. After winning 114 in 2038 and 122 in 2039, the Nailers finished 114-48 for 2040. They did win several close games as their 63 team saves was second-most in SEAL history. Da Nang led all of South Asia Baseball in runs (853), fewest allowed (579), and differential (+274).

The Nailers were 72-27 at the all-star break, seven games ahead of Mandalay and double-digits ahead of everyone else. Da Nang ended up 22 wins ahead of the Mammoths, who were the next best team. Mandalay struggled to 27-36 after the break, but their cushion still got them the #2 seed at 92-70 and the West Division crown. It was their third straight playoff berth and fifth in six years. Chittagong, Dhaka, and Kathmandu each tied for second in the West at 86-76; each ending four wins short of a wild card.

Hanoi had a six-game Central Division lead at the break and needed the cushion to hang on. It also helped that they took two of three in their final series against both Vientiane and Yangon. The Hounds at 91-71 earned their fourth division title in five years, while the Vampires and Green Dragons were both wild cards at 90-72. Vientiane ended an 11-year playoff drought, while it was the second trip in four years for Yangon. The Green Dragons are riding a 16-year streak of winning seasons.

Da Nang RF Ahanti Munusamy narrowly won Southeast Asia League MVP with 14 first place votes, sneaking past Kathmandu DH Ridwan Hassan at 12 and 349. Colombo CF Bhagavan Banerjee was a competitive third with five first place votes and 316 points, while Hanoi’s Javed Hossain and Bangkok’s Htwe Din both had a first place vote. Hassan notably led in home runs (62), while Banerjee had the best WAR (9.5) and most hits (218).

The winner Munusamy was the leader in average (.381), OPS (1.096), and wRC+ (188) in his Nailers debut. The 28-year old Indian started with Patna and was traded to Hanoi in mid-2039. Munusamy signed as a free agent for 2040 with Da Nang at $112,600,000 over five years. He had 206 hits, 122 runs, 44 doubles, 33 homers, 104 RBI, and 9.2 WAR.

Hong Do was the unanimous Pitcher of the Year in his sixth season for Vientiane, leading in ERA (2.20), innings (262.1), strikeouts (345), WHIP (0.88), K/BB (11.9), quality starts (25), complete games (15), and shutouts (6). He had an 18-9 record and five saves, missing a Triple Crown by two wins. The 28-year old Vietnamese righty had a 210 ERA+, 60 FIP-, and 8.3 WAR. Prior to the season, Do signed a three-year, $40,920,000 extension with the Vampires.

For the wild card round, Yangon had home field advantage over Vientiane having won the season series 10-8. They opened the series on a 5-1 win, but the Vampires pulled off 4-3 and 6-2 road wins to advance. Da Nang opened the division series with a 7-4 win, but Vientiane surprised with an 8-5 road win. The Vampires then got the series lead with a 5-1 road win, putting them ahead with the final two games in Laos.

Da Nang took game four 8-6 in ten innings, but Vientiane completed the stunning upset of the defending champs with a 4-0 finale with 7.2 scoreless innings from POTY Hong Do. This denied a fifth straight trip to the Southeast Asia League Championship for the 114-win Nailers. For the Vampires, their last SEAL final was their lone pennant win back in 2019.

On the other side, Hanoi opened with a 6-1 road win over Mandalay. The Mammoths countered 5-0 in game two, but the Hounds grabbed game three 5-3 for the series lead heading home to Vietnam. Mandalay secured game four 4-3, then survived 5-3 for another road win to take the series. It was the Mammoths’ second LCS trip in three years and their tenth over the last 15 years.

Mandalay began the series with 5-1 and 4-0 home wins. Vientiane won game three at home 3-2, but the Mammoths rolled 9-1 in game four. The Vampires countered 6-1 to send the series back to Myanmar. Mandalay clinched the series in exciting fashion with a 6-5 walkoff win in game six on Antonio Marconi’s walk-off two-run 441 foot bomb.

Marconi also doubled and tripled in the game with two runs and two RBI. The 31-year old Italian CF was previously a Gold Glove winner in Marseille, arriving in Mandalay for 2040 as a free agent. He was series MVP, going 9-23 with two homers and four RBI. Mandalay became eight-time Southeast Asia League champs (2018, 26, 27, 28, 29, 32, 35, 40).
