TWO FIVE-HIT STARS IN THE APBL ON THURSDAY
ALL-STARS DICKERSON & JOHNSON BOTH BAT 5/6 IN MULTI-RUN VICTORIES

MANHATTAN, N.Y. & NEWARK, N.J. (June 5, 1879) - There were eight games across the American Professional Baseball League on Thursday, and two of them saw batsmen hit 5/6 for the winning team.

At the Upper Manhattan Grounds, hosts Orange were handed yet another loss in a 12-3 drubbing by visiting Shamrock. Shamrock leadoff man Henry Jost had an excellent afternoon…
SHA CF Henry Jost: 4/6 (2B, 2 3B), 4 R, 4 RBI, 9 TB
…and earned Player of the Game Honors. However, he was outdone in the Hit department by teammate Bill Dickerson:
SHA 3B William Dickerson: 5/6 (all 1B), 1 R, 1 RBI
Jost’s four Hit/Run/RBI day continued the excellent start to his time with Shamrock. Through 27 games, the former Knickerbocker man is batting .344 (.831 OPS) with 27 Runs Batted In, 14 Stolen Bases, and 1.6 WAR. Dickerson’s five Singles raised his Average to .336 (.807 OPS) with 24 Runs Batten In, 16 Stolen Bases, and 1.2 WAR through 27 games.

The win increased Shamrock’s lead atop the Colonial Conference to two games at 18-9, while the loss kept Orange in the Metropolitan basement at 9-18.

Over in New Jersey, Gotham had themselves a similarly easy victory in a 16-9 mauling of Newark. This game was all Gotham from the start, with the visitors scoring three times in T1 and enjoying a 10-1 lead by the end of the third.

Gotham had fourteen Hits during the contest, and five of them were by 8x All-Star 2B Babe Johnson.
GOT 2B Babe Johnson: 5/6 (all 1B), 2 R, 2 RBI
Johnson’s 5/6 raised his Batting Average to .351 (.891 OPS) through 27 games, with 25 Runs Batted In, 10 Stolen Bases, and 1.4 WAR. 11x All-Star 1B Royal Altman leads Gotham with an Average of .405 (1.063 OPS).

Gotham’s seven-run victory sent them back over .500 at 14-13, which is currently good for fifth place in the Metropolitan (3 GB). Unfortunately, after a decent start Newark is 1-9 over their last ten games and now has the A.P.B.L.’s worst record at 8-19.
