LYONS HAS CAREER DAY IN THRILLING SUSQUEHANNA WIN
FIRST-YEAR REGULAR HAS FIVE HITS & EIGHT RBI AS 2x CHAMPS WIN 32-RUN CONTEST
SPRINGFIELD, MASS. (June 5, 1879) - The men of Pioneer & Susquehanna gathered for the second game of their series at the King Street Grounds on Thursday, and in the end the two teams gave each other quite the battle:
This was very much a back-and-forth affair. Susquehanna had a 2-1 lead after one, Pioneer was ahead 4-2 after two, Susquehanna was back ahead 5-4 after three, and the visitors extended the lead to 12-4 by the middle of the fifth. Then, Pioneer put up half a dozen runs in B5 to make it a 12-10 game, and after the teams traded runs in the sixth Pioneer responded to a Susquehanna run in T7 with three of their own to tie the game 14-14.
With two out in B8, Pioneer took the lead (15-14) when 3B Edward Sincavage scored on an Error by the Susquehanna 3B. Susquehanna came to bat for their last chance and, after the first two batsmen reached base, C Scott Lyons hit a three-run, Inside the Park Home Run over the head of the Pioneer CF that gave Susquehanna a 17-15 lead. 2x N.E.L. Pitcher of the Year William Hawk entered for B9, stranded a runner at third without allowing a run, and the visitors had the victory.
The game-winning Home Run by Lyons marked the end of a tremendous afternoon in Massachusetts: T1: 1-run Single past 2B off R. Schultz
T3: 1-run Single to LCF off R. Schultz (R)
T4: 1-run Single past 2B off R. Schultz (R)
T5: 2-run Double past 3B off H. Willis
T7: Reached via Error by 3B (R)
T9: 3-RUN ItP HOME RUN to CF off O. Martin
TOTAL: 5/6 (2B, HR), 4 R, 8 RBI, 9 TB, 1/2 CS, GW HR, 125 GMSC Lyons eight Runs Batted In and 125 Game Score were N.B.B.O. season highs. For the Susquehanna C, in his first season as a member of the lineup and his fifth as a member of the club, it was the game of his life. Lyons has started 16/17 Susquehanna games this year and is batting .424 (1.109 OPS) with 8 Extra-Base Hits (4 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR), 22 Runs Batted In, and 1.1 WAR quite the memorable start to his time as a regular for the 2x N.B.B.O. champions.
The thrilling victory put Susquehanna alone in 2nd in the Inland Championship at 11-6 (1 GB), with Pioneer now alone in 3rd at 10-7 (2 GB). Preseason favorites Lancastra Britannia are currently atop the Inland standings.
