July 22-24, 2058: vs NY Mets (3)
Game 1: Elijah Whitaker was very good today and helped the Rays to a 5-2 win over the Mets in the opener. The lefty (6-5) has had a checkered season but was on the mark today going 6 5 1 1 2 3 for the win, with Bill Sutherland nabbing save #22. Jesus Avalos had 4-hit day, driving in a pair and Rodrigo Aponte belted a solo homer (#19). Unfortunately the win was marred with 3B Paul Mayes suffering a sprained ankle that will keep him out five weeks.
July 23: Placed 3B Paul Mayes (ankle) on the 10-day IL, recalled IF Ivan Balderes from Durham.
Balderes is a 28-year-old who's only hit .334 and .372 the last two years with the Bulls. We got him a couple of years ago from the Angels where he had 100 solid big-league at-bats in his only stint in the show and he'll fill in at 3B/SS with Orlando Diaz also getting more PT.
Game 2: The Rays made easy work of the Mets again with a 6-2 win behind Tony Guzman. Guzman didn't allow a hit until the 6th and although he ran out of gas and Chris Friedman let the two men he put on score, he still improved to 10-4 with a 5.2 1 2 2 4 3 outing. The attack was balanced on offense with Angel Gonzales leading the way with a 2-run jack (#23).
Game 3: After winning the first two games 5-2 and 6-2 the Rays did the next logical thing and completed the sweep of the Mets with a 7-2 win in the finale. Once again they got an excellent turn from a starter with Dave Rose (11-5) going 7 5 2 2 1 7 despite allowing a couple of solo homers. The runs came mostly via a pair of big hits: Jesus Avalos' bases-clearing triple and a 2-run Rodrigo Aponte double.
Team record: 61-42. The Yankees took 2 of 3 so the Rays gained a game on them to re-open a 2 1/2-game division lead. Next up: A day off and then the homestand continues with more interleague action as the Dodgers visit for 3 games.
