If it helps any here are screens of leaders from 12 seasons simmed in historical mode on 2D engine completely. You can see quite a lot of years goal leader had more goals than assist leader. I did look it up and it happend about 4 times since 1930 so while it happens it's rare.
As bonus here is Gretzky who can't pass the puck to save his life...
In that span of years he had irl 632 - 543+977.
