June 17-19, 2058: vs Detroit (3)

Game 1: A combination of the bats going cold and Jake Cid giving up another critical homer gave the Rays a 1-0 loss to Detroit in the opener at Publix Park. Tiger pitching held Tampa Bay bats to only five hits, and with the game scoreless in the 8th the 37-year-old Cid, a closing legend still rated 70/60/65 served up a homer to a lefty for the games only run. He's now 3-8 and has yielded 6 homers in only 28 innings. We could be witnessing his inevitable falloff. Elijah Whitaker started and was perfect through 2 2/3 with 4 whiffs before departing with a mild calf strain which may or may not keep him out of his next start, and Randy Mastropietro went a nice 3.1 2 0 0 0 4 in long relief, but for naught.

Game 2: The Tigers topped the Rays again, this time by a 5-2 margin. Victor Boria (7-2) lost his second straight start, going 5.1 5 4 3 2 3 while Rodrigo Aponte drove in the only two Tampa Bay runs.

Game 3: Things were looking precarious for the Rays as Detroit took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 7th and threatened a sweep, but a 4-run rally led Tampa Bay to a 9-4 win over the Tigers in the finale. Rodrigo Aponte was the star today as he was 3-4 with two doubles, a triple and 4 RBI with one of those doubles a 2-run knock to put them ahead for good in the 7th. Joel Bland was also 2-4 with a 2-run single to put things away. Julio Mattila (6-4) had one bad inning (a 3-run 5th) but stuck it out to get the win after going 7 7 3 3 1 7.

Team record: 45-30. The Yankees have pulled within 2 1/2 games. Next up: a day off to travel to Minnesota for 3 games.
