June 29-July 1, 2040: at Boston (3)
I've had them in other Rays saves, and maybe had one before in this one as it was time for another Boston Massacre with the Rays sweeping the Red Sox by a combined score of 37-5 over the three games.
Rout #1 was a 14-3 bludgeoning of Boston in the opener although it was a more modest 7-3 through 7 innings. Jeremy Begley drove in 4 including a bases-clearing double, Justin Blackwell had a 2-run homer (#9), and Willis Ramirez went solo (#4) as 9 different players drove in at least one run. New backup C Sondre Nielsen also had a nice day, reaching base five times with a double, single and 3 walks while driving in a pair. Leo Gutierrez (7-4) went 5.1 5 2 2 2 5 for the win and Jerry Baylor went the final 3 2/3 for his first MLB save.
The Rays included a shutout in the sweep as they took the second game 11-0. Sebastian Burns (3-0) continued to impress since being pressed into the rotation, going 6 3 0 0 3 8 in a dominant performance and today it was Danny Mauricio's turn to pick up the 3-inning save, his first of the year. The top of the order was the offensive story today with leadoff man Jeremy Begley going 3-6 with 4 runs scored, HR #15 and 2 RBI, #3 hitter Danny Rodriguez 2-4 with a double, triple and 3 RBI, and it was a coming-out party for rookie Isaac Gardener, who hit in the 2-hole and went 4-6 with his first MLB double and his first MLB homer, driving in a pair. For good measure, Victor Gonzalez hit the 20-homer mark with a solo shot.
The finale looked like it might end up a close one with Tampa Bay only ahead 4-1 through 6 innings but they tacked on 8 more runs in the 7th and 8th to blow out Boston 12-2. Rogelio Fitzgerald drove in 3 with a double and a triple, Victor Gonzalez knocked in 4 including a 3-run homer (#21) and Justin Blackwell had a bases-empty blast (#10). On the pitching side of the ledger Ruben Cerrillo (9-3) was masterful at 7 3 1 1 0 3 on only 78 pitches so there was no 3+ inning save today.
Team record: 55-26, now 9 1/2 up on the Yankees and running away with the division. Next up: We conclude the road trip by kicking off the actual second half of the season with 3 in Cleveland. A midseason review will follow next.
