I’m hoping this is classic high/ low negotiating. They have to meet somewhere in between (closer to Skubals number) right? If this thing actually goes in front of an arbitrator that would be a disaster. What are the Tigers actually going to say to justify their offer? That he didn’t go out for another inning in a winner take all game? Yup sure sounds like he gets only 19 million because of it. As Skubal sits across from them putting a polish on both Cy Young Awards. I understand the Tigers don’t want to pay the freight on an extension. I also understand that it is really hard to trade him at this point because you can’t get maximum value for him. Why would a team like the Dodgers, Mets, Yankees or whoever spend prospect capital to get him when all they have to do is wait a year and be the highest bidder and keep your prospects. I just don’t see where the Tigers have any trade leverage here. All that aside though, I don’t understand why it seems like they are going scorched earth on the guy? Pay him the 30 million or whatever it is and let him pitch his tail off for that new contract. Why upset him in the arb process? It just seems so unnecessary.
