May 28-30, 2040: vs Texas (3)
The Rays Meat Loafed the Rangers, taking 2 of 3 and gaining a game on the Yankees who lost a pair, giving Tampa Bay a 1 1/2-game lead.
Leo Gutierrez was sharp and Tampa Bay generated enough offense to take a 4-1 win over Texas in the series opener at the Trop. Gutierrez evened his record at 4-4 after going 6.2 5 1 1 2 6 while Eric Lewis handled the 9th for save #9. Justin Blackwell belted a solo homer (#8) and scored twice to lead the offense along with Rogelio Fitzgerald, who contributed a 2-run single.
The second game was all Texas as the Rangers skunked the Rays 6-0. Ruben Cerrillo suffered his first loss of the year against five wins as he was knocked around to the tune of 6 10 6 6 1 8 and while the offense did get eight hits, they were too scattered to matter.
The Rays bounced back from being shut out the night before to light up the scoreboard in a 15-5 rout of the Rangers. Rogelio Fitzgerald had his best night in a Tampa Bay uniform since coming over from Milwaukee, driving in a season-high 6 runs on a 3-run first-inning homer (#7/15) and a 6th-inning bases-clearing double. Rays batters pounded out 19 hits with Justin Blackwell and Danny Rodriguez each collecting four of them while John Lopez added a 2-run homer (#2). This made things easy for Sergio Espinoza, who just keeps winning and is now 8-1 and tied for MLB win lead after going 7 4 2 2 1 7.
Team record: 35-18. Next up: A day off then we head north of the border for 3 against the Jays.
