May 13-16, 2058: at NY Yankees (4)
Game 1: Dave Rose was in fine form and the Rays used a trio of homers to beat the Yankees 4-3 in the opener of the teams' big 4-game series. Rose (4-3) went 7.1 6 2 2 1 6 and the bullpen just barely hung on with Devin Tadlock picking up his 4th save despite allowing a 9th-inning solo homer. Meanwhile the bats put 3 on the board in the 2nd on Dantel Chinchilla's solo shot (#2) and a 2-run jack from Paul Mayes (#4) while Angel Gonzales' mammoth 449-foot blast to center (#10) ended up the difference.
Game 2: The Rays got great starting pitching again and opened up a 3 1/2-game lead on the Yankees with a 4-1 win in the second game in the Bronx. Tony Guzman (3-2) was dealing today at 7 5 1 0 0 6 and Bill Sutherland needed only 7 pitches to retire New York in order in the 9th for his 11th save. RBI singles from Omar Gaitan and Paul Mayes in the 4th opened up a 3-0 Tampa Bay lead as Mayes had 3 hits on the day and Dantel Chinchilla chipped in a pair of doubles.
Game 3: For the third straight game Tampa Bay had excellent starting pitching but unfortunately the offense didn't pull their weight as the Yankees eked out a 1-0 win. Elijah Whitaker (2-2) deserved a better fate, especially as the only run he allowed was unearned thanks to an Aaron White error, leaving him with a 6 1 1 0 4 7 line. But Yankee pitching held the Rays to a mere five hits and that was never going to be enough.
Game 4: After taking the first two games in the series the Rays had to disappointingly settle for a split as the Yankees took the finale 5-2. As in yesterday's game a Tampa Bay fielding miscue loomed large as with two out in the fifth a Dantel Chinchilla error loaded the bases and instead of being out of the inning the next batter belted a grand slam, erasing a 2-1 lead. That slam came off Jonathan Bolon (0-1), who was pressed into an early relief appearance when Victor Boria had to leave a back tweak after going only 2.2 4 1 1 1 3. Fortunately it's minor and he'll make his next start. A Jordan Sailes solo homer (#8) was the offensive highlight for the Rays.
Team record: 27-17. Next up: Back home for 3 against Minnesota.
Rays news: OF Joel Bland is ready to come back from injury after missing a month and he'll play a couple of rehab games for Durham before rejoining the club.
