COLD CREEK 1ST SACKER GURLEY INDUCTED INTO IPA HALL OF FAME ON FIRST TRY
Only one player made it into the Islandian Pro Alliance Hall of Fame this year and one came close. First baseman Dude Gurley made it on his first try, while Far Mountain right fielder Ernie Friedricks just barely missed out on the honor in his 7th year on the list. Gurley spent all of his 16 seasons with the Cold Creek Raccoons, playing in 2240 games with a .310 career batting average and 2463 hits. He also scored 1331 runs and drove in 1399 runs with 389 home runs. Gurley was a 5-time All-Star, 2073 RU Rookie of the Year and a Golden Glover.
Gurley retired from baseball when he was 38.
Friedricks batted .311 in his 13 years, scored 1286 runs and stole 786 bases, leading the league 6 times.
"Gurley simply produced -- game after game after game. That's what I loved about him."
Those sentiments were expressed by one of Dude Gurley's managers from his Cold Creek Raccoons days at the gifted first baseman's Hall of Fame induction ceremony yesterday. On a cloudy, but comfortable afternoon, he took his rightful place among the best Islandian Pro Alliance players of all-time.
The newest Hall of Famer assessed his career in these words: "I did my best to contribute to the team -- in the field, at the plate, in the dugout. I didn't care about personal numbers. I just went out there to win."
The ballots are counted and the results are in. One player was enshrined this year: Dude Gurley will now see his plaque mounted beside the other greats from the game.
The full voting results are included here. Players require 75% of ballots cast to be elected to the Hall, may stay on the ballot for up to 10 years if they receive at least 5% of the votes. Players must be retired for 3 years before they are eligible for induction to the Hall of Fame.
