Game 148: Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees
Yankees Crush Red Sox 13–3 Behind Rizzo’s Power Surge
New York, NY — The New York Yankees wasted no time seizing control of Friday night’s rivalry showdown, piling on early offense and cruising to a decisive 13–3 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. Anthony Rizzo powered the attack, going 3-for-5 with a three-run homer, two singles, three RBI and two runs scored. His first-inning blast off Boston starter Logan Gilbert capped a four-run opening frame and set the tone for a night dominated by New York’s lineup from top to bottom.
The Yankees (87–61) collected 15 hits, including multi-hit performances from Jon Berti (3-for-5), Aaron Judge (2-for-5), DJ LeMahieu (2-for-4), and Rizzo. Judge tripled in the third, while Trent Grisham added a two-run homer in the fifth. On the mound, left-hander Clayton Hampton (6-2) delivered 6⅔ innings of one-run baseball, striking out six while allowing only five hits and two walks; Game Score 64.
Boston (81–67) struggled to string anything together offensively. Masataka Yoshida collected three of the team’s seven hits, and Triston Casas provided the lone highlight with a two-run homer in the eighth off reliever JT Brubaker. Gilbert (9-14) never found his footing, lasting just 2⅓ innings, surrendering five runs on six hits and taking the loss; Game Score 22. Boston’s bullpen offered little relief, allowing eight more runs across the middle innings with disappointing showing from Naoyuki Uwasawa and Garrett Cleavinger.
The Yankees pulled away with a four-run fifth and a three-run sixth, building a double-digit lead that kept the home crowd of 52,241 buzzing throughout the night. The loss drops Boston back in the Wild Card race.
