The injury was listed as "DTD", and I gather that in the land of the AI Manager this means send him out there and see what happens. I suppose that makes sense, given the durability and stamina of SP in the deadball era. But shouldn't the AI Manager see the injury report as a red flag, maybe skip over him in the rotation? The "bruise" suggested something like being hit by a line drive, rather than arm trouble. I guess the manager thought he could pitch through it. Nope. And I was playing with the Baltimore Orioles (formerly the St. Lous Browns), one of the worst teams in history.

To circle back, I agree that short-term injuries should be more common (even in 1911), and adding the thought that the AI Manager ought to be more realistic about resting a guy who is hurting.
Your example is exactly what I'm talking about. Thing is, the human manager will probably either put the player on the IL or skip his turn when it comes around again. I just think a lot more of the minor aches and pains should lead to a missed game or two or three etc.
