April 24-26, 2040: vs Toronto (3)

The Rays struggled to score runs in the first two games but unloaded in the finale and as a result took 2 of 3 from the Jays at the Trop.

Transaction: John Lopez was put on the restricted list for his 6-game suspension and 1B/OF Kyle Bolden was recalled from Durham to give us another RH bat.

The offense was a problem in the opener as they only managed two hits through the first seven innings and didn't score until they were down 4-0 in the 9th as they fell 4-2 to Toronto. Danny Morales (1-4) pitched well at 6 3 2 2 2 4 but received no support as he's now equaled the number of losses he had in all of 2039 when he went 16-4. And Danny Mauricio gave up a 2-run homer in the 9th which meant the two runs they scored in the bottom of the inning were meaningless.

The Rays didn't light up the scoreboard in the second game but did enough to beat the Jays by the same 4-2 score they lost by the night before. Leo Gutierrez was excellent at 5.2 3 0 0 3 6 but took a no-decision as the offense waited until he left to score twice in both the 6th and 7th innings. New acquisition Melvin Olvera has been one of the few Rays to consistently hit since the season started and his 2-run homer (#4) in the 6th broke a 0-0 deadlock, then Danny Rodriguez and Tony Fisher had RBI knocks in the next inning. Moises Baca (1-0) earned the relief win and Walt Kelly gave up a run in the 9th but still picked up save #3.

Tampa Bay bats took out a near-month of frustration in the finale on Toronto pitching as they obliterated the Jays 16-1 to take the series. The Rays amassed 21 hits but amazingly only two of them went for extra bases. Danny Rivera had a 2-run double as part of a 3-hit, 4-RBI day and Jeremy Begley went yard (#6) as part of his Rays-career high 5 hits, which saw him score 3 runs and drive in the same number. Willis Ramirez was 3-5 with 4 runs scored and an RBI as well. Ruben Cerrillo (4-0) was better than he needed to be at 6 5 1 1 0 7 and Chad Montgomery struck out 7 Jays over 3 innings of one-hit ball to pick up his first save.

Team record: 12-9. The Yankees remained red-hot and swept their series to push the Rays 3 1/2 game back in the division. Next up: Cleveland visits the Trop for 3 games.

MLB News: 41-year-old Fernando Tatis Jr., in his second season with Atlanta after spending the first 16 with San Diego, joined the 3000-hit club while Chicago's Kevin Aguillard recorded career hit #2000.
