MLB news: Sept. 27 -- Red Sox secure final spot in AL playoffs
Despite a 5-1 loss to the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox are assured of being part of the field for the upcoming American League playoffs.
The Baltimore Orioles (93-76) long ago clinched the American League East Division title and currently lead the Red Sox by 10 games.
But Boston (83-76) tops the Houston Astros by four games in the race for the third and final wild card. Both teams have three games remaining in the regular season.
The Minnesota Twins (96-63) and Los Angeles Angels (88-71) will be the top two wild cards and will face off in the wild-card round.
The Red Sox will play the AL West champion Seattle Mariners (89-70) in a three-game series.
The postseason berth is the first for Boston since 2028.
The Red Sox last reached the World Series in 2018, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers.
