MLB news: Sept. 26 -- Marlins are NL East champs for first time
Despite not playing a game, the Miami Marlins have clinched the championship of the National League East Division for the first time in franchise history.
Debuting in 1993, all four of Miami's postseason appearances have come as wild cards, including the seasons it won the World Series in 1997 and 2003.
At 90-69, the Marlins lead the NL East by 5.5 games over the Philadelphia Phillies with five games left in the regular season.
In the race for home-field advantage in the National League, Miami owns a one-game edge over the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Brewers, who top the NL Central, have played two more games than Marlins and are 90-69.
Miami last reached the World Series in 2003, when it defeated the New York Yankees.
