I always do an expansion team. I draft a few times and try different players out and, after the first patch, I start playing for real.

The team isn't great but I am also not saddled with players that don't fit the type of team I want to build.

And, I consider my early test saves as a mock draft period...in real life, there are so many mock drafts before the real expansion drafts imagining what a team would be with different player combinations.
