Malware from Mediafire

I've repeatedly had a bad experience trying to download mods through "Mediafire". I get an aggressive pop-up that purports to be from "McAfee", that takes over my screen, and forces me to abort. I have to do a hard reboot, and even after that get pop-ups (not text messages or e-mails that I could trace) about supposed malware (i.e. this stuff).

This happened months back on my main computer, and took considerable effort to wipe. Pretty discouraging that the same thing is happening on the same site, different computer. First time was a Mac Mini, and today a MacBook Pro. It happened with different mods, different sources, but the same download site.

Given the above, I doubt this is "user error" or an infected computer. Has anyone else had this unfortunate experience?

I would love to be able to download sounds and stadiums and other cool stuff. Is there a work-around? I unfortunately don't use Steam. Could I pull stadiums from past versions of OOTP into 26?
