May 21-27, 2029
May 21: vs Detroit 1-4 L. LP-McGee (6-2, 3 5 3 3 3 3). Rays could never get the bats going tonight after falling behind 3-0 early.
May 22: vs Detroit 10-7 W. WP-McMillon (4-1). S-Klein (16). Starter-Sheehan (4 7 3 3 2 7). HR-Cermak 2 (12), Isaac 2 (12), J.Ramos (5). One of the wildest games of the year so far as the Rays trailed 4-2 in the 6th to score 5 and go ahead, only to blow that 7-4 lead in the 8th before scoring 3 in the bottom of the inning to win it, with Ramos' 2-run pinch-homer the difference. Isaac knocked in 5 as his second of the day was a slam in that 6th inning.
May 23: vs Detroit 7-0 W. WP-H.Smith (6-1, 7 3 0 0 1 10). HR-Montes (10), B.Taylor (3). Smith was dominant and he needed to be for most of his outing as the Rays only led 1-0 into the 6th before breaking it open.
May 24: at Cleveland 2-8 L. LP-Misiorowski (0-3, 4 8 6 6 3 5, 3 HR). HR-Keegan (3). The Misiorowski experiment in the rotation is failing badly as he was hit hard again today, it may be time to give Horton or Mercedes a shot to start.
May 25: at Cleveland 0-4 L. LP-Maldonado (0-1). Starter-Bradley (6.2 4 0 0 2 7). Another rough night in Cleveland although Taj went toe-to-toe with Ian Anderson before Cleveland scored all 4 of its runs in the 8th off Maldonado with the help of a pair of Rays errors.
Transaction: Jordan Westburg is off the IL again and again Brayden Taylor goes back to Durham despite filling in admirably.
May 26: at Cleveland 4-3 W. WP-Baumeister (1-0). S-Klein (17). Starter-McGee (5.1 7 3 3 3 7). HR-J.Ramos (6). The Rays completely stole this one as they were down 3-0 and being utterly dominated by Gavin Williams, who didn't allow a runner until the 5th or a hit until the 6th and went 7 1 0 0 2 11. But they loaded the bases against Zach Jackson in the 8th and Ramos was the pinch-hit hero again, coming off the bench to belt a grand slam and give the Rays a fortunate win.
May 27: at Cleveland 0-5 L. LP-Sheehan (3-4, 4.1 7 5 5 1 4). Tampa Bay was extremely fortunate not to have been swept in this 4-game series in Cleveland as they were shut out for the second time in three days and only scored 6 runs in all, 4 of them on one swing of the bat yesterday. Today it was Jack Neely holding them to two hits over 6 1/3 as they will be glad to be heading elsewhere.
Team record: 36-17. Despite the mediocre week they're still up 6 1/2 on Baltimore. Next week: 3 in Detroit, an off-day, and back home for 3 against the White Sox.
Players of the Week:
AL: Zack Stewart (HOU), 9-19, 4 HR, 10 RBI
NL: Tyler Black (MIL), 11-26, 2 HR, 6 RBI
MLB News: Atlanta superstar Ronald Acuna Jr. will miss five weeks with a broken hand and a couple of longtime vets announced their retirements at the end of the season: Toronto P Joe Musgrove and Arizona 1B Christian Walker.
