Week 17 - August 7th: Singer Returns from IL; Royals Make Homestand Against Red Sox, Win Game 3
We sent Brady Singer to a rehab assignment in Omaha, which should position him well when September 1st arrives for roster expansion. We will have to absorb the $5.5 million salary hit when we release Chris Stratton since he was not claimed off waivers. That’s not ideal, but it’s unavoidable, and we will try to recover as much as possible through remaining seasonal revenue. We are still under budget by about $1.5 million, so I’m not too worried about it.
As a final roster change, we optioned 3B David Schnieder to Omaha to bring 3B/SS Maikel Garcia back up and finish the season on the active roster. I told him we’d get him back up sooner rather than later and Schnieder seems to be batting cold as of late, only batting
.228/.321/.386 with 1 H, 1 R, and 7 strikeouts in 17 AB. Schnieder has two option years, so he’s in our control for the next few years to taxi between Triple-A and the big club.
Game Summary – August 7th – Royals Win at Home, 7-4
Kansas City Royals starter Zach Eflin found his rhythm in his team's 7-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Eflin gave up 3 runs over 7 innings to earn the win. He allowed 6 hits, walked none, and struck out 6. His record improves to 2-0. Kansas City is now 52-65. Kyle Isbel hit a big 3-run home run in the bottom of the second inning for the Royals. With Kansas City leading 2-0 and runners on second and third, he watched a sinker from Garrett Whitlock, who is tied for second in the AL with a 10.5 K/9 rate, and made it count. That was his sixth home run of the season, putting the Royals ahead 5-0.
"Feels good to get the job done," Isbel said after the game.
