The Red Springs Red Robins opened the Golden Leaf Champions Cup in emphatic fashion, hammering the Angier-Fuquay Springs Bulls 12-1 on Thursday night at The Nest.
Leading just 3-1 entering the bottom of the eighth, the Robins broke the game wide open with a nine-run, 11-hit rally that electrified the home crowd.
Catcher
Shane Hangen led the way with a 3-for-4 night that included a home run, double and three RBIs. Shortstop
Josh Fleisher, bumped up to the No. 2 spot in the order, delivered two hits and three RBIs, while
Ken Rogers added three hits and a pair of steals.
Starter
Luke Restivo tossed seven shutout innings to earn the win, while the bullpen was barely touched — only
Bill Lane worked an inning before mop-up man
Pat Roles finished it out.
While it's just one victory in a best-of-seven, there's a strong feeling that Angier-Fuquay Springs is already supremely on its back foot. Game 2 is set for tomorrow (August 15), with left-hander
Dave Colvin expected to start for the Robins. From there, the series will shift to Angier's quirky home diamond for games 3, 4 and if necessary 5.
