Live from Mile High: Bottom of the 11th vs. Dodgers!
(Sound of the crowd buzzing, faint organ music)
Greg Hamilton (Rockies Play-by-Play):: "Welcome back to Mile High Stadium, where we are knotted up at one run apiece in the bottom of the eleventh inning. What a great pitching dual this has been, particularly from our starter, Armando Reynoso, and Orel Hershiser for the Dodgers, who just completed nine fantastic innings. But now, the Dodgers have brough in Brian Black and the Rockies have a chance to walk it of! Eddie Taubensee steps to the plate to pinch hit for Chuck Finley...
(Sound of bat crack)
Greg Hamilton: "And Taubensee sends a shot! Deep to left field! That ball is heading for the gap...it's off the wall! Taubensee rounds first, he's heading for second, and he's in with a leadoff standup double! The Rockies have a runner is scoring position to start the eleventh!"
Sam Peterson (Color Commentator): "That's exactly what you want, Greg! You get a guy on second base, no outs, that puts all the pressure right on Black. He's got to be pinpoint now, can't afford a mistake. That's a veteran at-bat by Taubensee, just putting it where they ain't."
Greg Hamilton: "Indeed, Sam. Up next is Jerry Browne, who has already singled once tonight, and also hit a solo home run earlier to tie this game up in the ninth. Can he move Taubensee over?"
(Sound of bat crack)
Greg Hamilton: "Browne hits a sharp grounder through the right side! That's a base hit! Taubensee holds at third, smart base running. He's not the most fleet of foot and you don't want to make the first out of the inning at home. So now we've got runners at the corners with nobody out! The tension here at Mile High is palpable, folks!"
Sam Peterson: "Pressure, pressure, pressure! That's how you manufacture runs, Greg. You get traffic on the bases, you make the pitcher work. Black's got to be careful now. Any wild pitch, any mistake, and the winning run is right there. This stadium is absolutely vibrating!"
Greg Hamilton: "And the Dodger' manager is out of the dugout, heading to the mound to talk with Brian Black. This is a crucial moment. The bases are not yet loaded, but the potential is there. And now walking to the plate, the speedy Lance Johnson!"
(Pitch)
Greg Hamilton: "Johnson takes a strike on the outside corner. Black is trying to find his rhythm. Here's the 3-2 pitch...."
(Pitch, umpire calls ball four)
Greg Hamilton: "And Johnson works a walk! The bases are LOADED for the Colorado Rockies in the bottom of the eleventh inning! This place is going absolutely wild, Sam!"
Sam Peterson: "Wow!" That's a huge walk, Greg! Johnson showed some great discipline there. Just worked the count, forced Black to throw strikes, and he couldn't. Now the bases are juiced, and the pressure is squarely on the pitcher. He's got nowhere to put anybody. He's got to challenge the next hitter, and that next hitter is Geronimo Berroa. Not necessarily the guy you want to challenge. This is what you play for, folks!"
Greg Hamilton: "The crowed is on its feet, a deafening roar here at Mile High! Bases loaded, nobody out in the bottom of the eleventh, tied at one. And walking to the plate, the left fielder, Geronimo Berroa! He's 1-for-4 tonight, with a walk, but this is the biggest at bat of the night. Black looks in for the sign...the wind-up...and the pitch!"
(Sound of loud, resounding CRACK of the bat followed by an explosion of crowd noise)
Greg Hamilton: "SWING AND A DRIVE! DEEP LEFT FIELD! THAT BALL IS HIGH! THAT BALL IS DEEP! THAT BALL IS GONE! A GRAND SLAM! A GRAND SLAM FOR GERONIMO BERROA! THE ROCKIES WIN IT! THE ROCKIES WIN IT 5-1! Oh, the pandemonium at Mile High Stadium! What a finish! What a game! The Rockies take the series from the Los Angeles Dodgers on a walk-off grand slam from Geronimo Berroa!"
(Crowd cheers loudly, sustained roar, celebratory music plays)
Same Peterson: "UNBELIEVABLE, GREG! UNBELIEVABLE! That's how you win a ballgame! Berroa just unloaded on that fastball. He didn't miss! Four runs, just like that! Black left one up, and Berroa didn't just hit it; he launched it! This team, Greg, they just don't quit! What a moment for this second year franchise, and what a moment for Berroa!"
Post-Game Interview with Geronimo Berroa
(Crowd noise slightly muffled, Greg Hamilton's voice clear)
Greg Hamilton: "Geronimo, congratulations! What a swing! What a moment! Tell us what you were thinking when you stepped to the plate with the bases loaded there in the eleventh."
Geronimo Berroa: (Smiling, a little breathless) "Oh, man, Greg. I just want to hit ball hard. Pitcher, he give me one pitch, a fastball, and I just try to put good swing. Me teammates, they on base. I want to help them. Just hit hard. And...and is gone! Is grand slam! So happy!"
Greg Hamilton: "The crowd here, they absolutely erupted! What did it feel like rounding the bases, seeing all your teammates at home plate?"
Geronimo Berroa: "Oh, the fans, they amazing! Very loud. I feel...I feel so good. Like a dream. Teammates, they run to me, all jumping. Manager Dusty, he smile so big! We work hard, you know? This win, it very important for us. Show we can fight. Show we can win big games. Vamos Rockies!"
Greg Hamilton: "Thank you, Geronimo, and congratulations again! What a night!"
"Mile High Mike's" Final Thoughts
"You heard it, folks! You just heard it! Geronimo Berroa! A walk-off GRAND SLAM!" I'm telling you, you couldn't write a script like this! After losing the first game of the series, then taking the next two, and then pulling this off in extra innings?! This team has got heart, grit, and a flair for the dramatic! They're not just winning; they're winning in style! This is Mile High Magic, folks, pure and simple! The Rockies are now in first place in the NL West at 24-16! Twenty-four wins, sixteen loses! A franchise barely a month and half into their second season ever, and we're playing this kind of baseball! Who picked that?! Nobody, that's who!"
