Week 12 – May 2024 – May was Meh. Here’s What We Know…
We end May above 500 with a 14-13 W-L record, giving us a .519 winning percentage. I’ll take it, but I’m not happy. We are seeing the flaws and where we need to improve offensively and defensively. Of the 8 series games this month, we did not sweep any teams; we split two with the Angels and Twins, won two against the Athletics and Tigers, and lost the rest.
Most prominent still is our lack of offense. We have not improved upon anything since last month and teeter among the league’s bottom third in most categories. We do maintain 1st place in stolen bases and improved our baserunning, up from an 8th place negative 0.3 to a +3.0, putting us in 2nd place. We did better against left-handed pitching, but we didn’t see many, so it’s trivial in my mind without improving upon other areas. Everything else about our offense is honestly…offensive.
Team pitching is carrying us, but they are not consistent, and any more injuries such that we sustained with Seth will hurt us for sure. Cole Ragans is 1/5th of the rotation and on a hot streak right now, the only one throwing under a 4.00 ERA. He can’t be over-throwing in games with his fragility, though. We need to improve our strikeout rate, and I’ll be happy to sustain these stats for now to focus on improving our offense.
I’m not sure exactly what I’m going to do to fix the team, but today I begin some hard thinking and possibly decisions. Everyone and everything is on the table. The fine-tuning of this team begins now as we enter June.
