Rockies May Recap: A Month of Growth and Grinding

May has come to a close, and our Colorado Rockies have navigated another demanding stretch of their inaugural season. After a challenging road trip, the team returned to the friendly confines of Mile High Stadium to wrap up the month with a three-game set against the Phillies and the first of three against the Pirates.

The month of May saw the Rockies play 29 games finishing with a 14-15 record bringing their overall mark to 26-26. The team continued to show resilience and flashes of brilliance, proving they can compete with the established clubs.

Wrapping Up May: Homestand Against Phillies and Pirates
Philadelphia Phillies (2-1)
--Game 1: Rockies 3 Phillies 1
In the series opener, Terry Mulholland delivered a strong performance on the mound, holding the Phillies to just one run over seven innings. The offense provided just enough support, with Geronimo Berroa hitting a crucial 2-run single to break a scoreless tie in the sixth. Jack Armstrong closed it out for the save.
--Game 2: Rockies 11 Phillies 8
Game 2 saw a high-scoring slugfest where the Rockies bats came alive. Jeff Blauser was the offensive star, driving in four runs, including a key single during a big fifth inning. The Rockies offense piled on 11 runs, securing a hard-fought victory despite a late Phillies rally.
--Game 3: Phillies 5 Rockies 3
The Phillies managed to get the final game of the series. Al Martin's home run and a solid outing from Jamie Moyer helped Philadelphia secure the win. Jeff Blauser and Brian Hunter both homered for the Rockies, but it wasn't enough to complete the sweep.

Pittsburgh Pirates Series (1-0)
--Game 1: Rockies 2 Pirates 1
In the first game of a three game set, the Rockies managed to win a tight, low-scoring affair. Derrick May delivered the decisive blow with a clutch RBI single in the seventh inning. Jack Armstrong picked up the win in relief, and Steve Cooke earned the save, securing a hard-fought victory over a tough Pirates team led by Greg Maddux.

"Mile High Mike" Weighs in on May
"Alright, alright, settle down folks! It's your man, 'Mile High Mike,' back on the air, and we're talking Rockies baseball! May is in the books and if you told me this expansion team would be playing .500 ball at the end of May, I'd have told you you've been spending too much time at altitude without oxygen!

"Look 14-15 for the month ain't exactly setting the world on fire, but you gotta look at what they faced! Long road trips, tough divisions, and they're still grinding. They're not getting blown out every night. We saw some real grit in that Phillies series, putting up 11 runs in one game! And that win against Maddux and the Pirates? That's a statement, folks. That's showing me they can hang with the big boys.

"Blauser's still swinging a hot bat, Berroa's coming through, and the pitching, when it's on, can shut down good lineups. Gooden had a gem in Houston, Mulholland looked sharp against the Phillies. The bullpen, those guys are earning their paychecks.

"Are they perfect? Nah. Are the going to win the pennant this year? Probably not. But are they competing? Are they making it interesting? You bet your bottom dollar they are! This team's got heart, and that's something you can't teach. We're still above .500 at home, and that's huge. Keep showing up, Denver! These boys are worth watching. We'll be right back after this break!"
