Rockies Light Up Mile High in Historic Home Opener

What a night! The Rockies offense exploded, led by a powerful performance from center fielder Lance Johnson, the player of the game, was simply unstoppable, going 4-for-5 with a double and a home run, driving in four and scoring twice. He set the tone for a relentless offensive attack that the Expos simply couldn't handle.

But Johnson wasn't alone. Second baseman Jeff Blauser electrified the home crowd with not one, but two home runs, including a two-run shot in the first inning that put the Rockies up early. The power surge continued with blasts from Geronimo Berroa and Shawon Dunston, turning the historic night into a full-on demolition.

On the mound, pitcher Gil Heredia was brilliant. He handled the pressure of the historic night with veteran composure, pitching 6.2 solid innings and limiting the Expos to just two runs. His performance, combined with the offensive barrage, left Montreal's manager, Tom Runnells, with a simple, defeated assessment of the game: "Just something that happens."

Local Reaction from the Denver Media
"Mile High Mike" O'Connell, Denver Sports Radio

"MILE HIGH MAGIC! Did you see it, Denver?! Our boys put on a show for the home crowd. Gil Heredia was dialed in, giving us a beautiful start. And that offense! Lance Johnson, Blauser, with TWO BOMBS! Every guy in the lineup was hitting! The Expos came to our house and got a taste of what Mile High baseball is all about. Forget the altitude, forget the expansion-team struggles. We're on the board, we're winning at home, and the party has just started."

Isabelle "Izzy" Garcia, The Denver Post
"The Colorado Rockies' home opener was everything a new franchise could hope for. The atmosphere was celebratory, the crowd was electric, and the team responded with a dominating performance. Lance Johnson, in particular, looked like a true leader at the plate, showcasing both speed and power. But it was the collective offensive effort, with multiple players demonstrating their power, that truly signaled what this team might be capable of. The decisive victory gives this young club significant momentum and strong sense of identity. While it's early in the season, this home opener will undoubtedly be a moment fans will remember for years to come."
