Rockies Make Their Debut

ESPN BASEBALL TONIGHT
"BASEBALL TONIGHT: ROCKIES DEBUT"

CHRIS BERMAN
Good evening, sports fans! Welcome to Baseball Tonight where we've got a whole new team to talk about! The Colorado Rockies have officially taken the field, and while they may have lost a game, they've won a piece of history! But history, as they say, isn't always pretty. The New York Mets put a damper on the Rockies' debut, winning this one by a score of 10-2! Let's get right to the highlights with our main man, 'The Baseball Man,' Peter Gammons!"

PETER GAMMONS
"Thanks, Chris. It was a tough debut for the Rockies, but not without some bright spots. The Mets' bats were just too much, especially early in the second inning. But if you're GM Caleb Thorne and Manager Dusty Rhodes, you've got to be happy with some of what you saw. The bats were able to get some hits and a guy like Geronimo Berroa had a very good day at the plate."

"A grand old day at Shea! For the Mets, it was all about one big swing, one big inning! In the bottom of the second, with two out, Dave Magadan, delivers a two-run single to put the Mets on top 2-0! Little bit later, it's 'The Big Cat,' Andres Gallaraga, and he hits a three-run blast! Back, back, back...gone! Mets up 5-0! That's how you put a team on the ropes early! The Rockies battled back, but it was just too much for this new team to overcome!"

It's a tough day on the injury front, Peter. Mike Kingery with a beautiful triple, but a has to leave the game with an injury. We'll have to wait and see the severity but for now he's out.

PETER GAMMONS
"It is a tough break, Chris. Kingery was a guy they were counting on to patrol the outfield, and for him to go down with a leg injury in the very first game, that's something Caleb Thorne is going to have to address immediately. You can't afford to lose key pieces on an expansion team. You also saw Dwight Gooden, the former Met, on the mound for the Rockies. He showed flashes of what made him great, but that 5-run second inning, that's jus the kind of thing that happens with you're working with a new defense and new team. He pitched into the fifth and kept them in the game after that tough second, which is a good sign."

CHRIS BERMAN
"But the hits were there! Tell us about the Rockies offense, Peter!"

PETER GAMMONS
"Well, you saw a few guys swing the bat pretty well. Geronimo Berroa, who had three hits looked solid. Shawon Dunston had a double. The Rockies were able to get 12 hits, but they just couldn't bunch them together in the right spots. They left nine men on base. That's a sign of a team still learning how to win. But the good new is, they didn't get shut out. The bats were active. They've got something to build on."

CHRIS BERMAN
"Final thought Peter?"

PETER GAMMONS
"Chris, this is an expansion team. There's a lot of pressure, and there are a lot of tough games ahead. But the fact that they got some hits, they showed some fight, and some of the young guys performed well--that's what you build on. The loss hurts, but the lessons they learned in this first game, those are what matter most in the long run. The season is long, and the Rockies are just getting started."

CHRIS BERMAN
"That's going to do it for us here on Baseball Tonight! We'll see you tomorrow night.
