Rockies Play First Spring Training Game
Game Recap: Padres Edge Rockies 4-3
The Rockies' inaugural spring training game saw a solid performance from a number of players. Catcher Sandy Alomar, Jr. a key acquisition in the expansion draft, had a strong showing at the plate, collecting a pair of hits in the loss. The first home run in franchise history was hit by first basement Terry Jorgensen, who launched a solo shot over the fence.
On the mound, veteran starter Dwight Gooden took the loss, but showed some good moments in his debut. He finished he outing with 2.2 innings pitcher, giving up 4 hits and 2 earned runs, while walking 2 and striking out 2. It was a good first step for the veteran ace.
Dusty Rhodes Gives His Thoughts on the First Game
After the game, Manager Dusty Rhodes addressed the media, focusing on the team's effort and the overall experience of their first game.
Dusty Rhodes: "You know, the score wasn't what we wanted, but that's not what today was about. We've got a lot of guys here who have never played together, and they're learning to be a team. I saw a lot of good things out there. Sandy Alomar looked great at the plate, and for Terry Jorgensen to hit our first home run...that's a moment he'll never forget. Gooden got a little wild, but he's a veteran and he'll shake off the rust. This what spring training is for. We're building a foundation, and you can see the effort and potential. I'm proud of the way our guys competed."
"Mile High Mike" O'Connell Reacts
The phones at Denver Sports Radio were buzzing after the game, and "Mile High Mike" O'Connell was there to give his take.
"Mile High Mike" O'Connell: "It's a beautiful thing, isn't it folks? The first game is in the books! We lost 4-3, but who cares about the final score? This is about seeing on our guys on the field. Alomar looks like the real deal with a couple of hits, and Terry Jorgensen? He's a legend already, with the first home run in franchise history. This is what it's all about! It's only spring training, but you can feel the excitement. The team is finally real. We've got a lot of work to do, but this is a great start."
