After several failed attempts to land a front-line starter from Miami or Cleveland, the Boston Red Sox finally found a willing trading partner in a Seattle Mariners team that recognized they were out of playoff contention this year. In exchange for 27-year old SP Logan Gilbert, an 11th round pick in the 2025 draft, and $246,000 in cash, Boston shipped off pitcher 28-year old SP Garrett Whitlock, 24-year old CF Gilberto Jimenez, 24-year old C Nathan Hickey, and selections in the 17th and 18th rounds of the 2025 draft.

While Gilbert's 2024 performance stats don't jump off the page as impressive, his underlying ratings have the makings of something special. Moving on from Whitlock was difficult because the potential is there and has very reasonable salary obligations ($20.8M) over the next 3 years, with team option for $10.5M in 2028. To make the deal happen, I had to move two of Boston's top-15 hitting prospects (Hickey 9th hitting prospect, 15th overall and Jimenez 15th hitting prospect, 29th overall). The swap of draft picks helps soften the blow of losing hitting talent, but unless I get lucky with my 11th round pick I will have come out on the short end of the prospects/picks aspect of the deal.
