2023 Regular Season

Eastern League Review

In the Atlantic division, Philadelphia (88-74) led by the top pitching staff in the east made a return to the playoffs for the first time in 6 years, taking the title by 3 games from a New York team (85-77) who slumped badly in the second half of the season and finished 17 games below their 2022 record. Washington (75-87) despite having the second highest payroll in the east behind Tampa Bay, were held back by their offense and suffered through an inconsistent season, eventually finishing 15 games off their 2022 pace, while Boston brought up the rear with a dismal 70-win season, their third last place finish in four seasons.
In the Central, the division race went down to the wire, going into the last week three teams were within two games of the lead. Chicago slumped to a 2-4 finish including being swept by Cleveland to finish third with an 89-73 record. The Corsairs sweep of Chicago meant they finished one game ahead at 90-72 while Indianapolis (90-72) dropped their final game to finish in a tie with Cleveland and set up a one game playoff to decide the division. Cleveland overcame Eric Parker (17-8, 2.23 ERA) and the Racers 4-2 to win the division and send the Racers to the playoffs as the wild card team. Detroit continued their downward spiral sliding to an abysmal 57-105 record.
The Southeast division belonged to Atlanta (97-65) who climbed back to the top to claim the title after a two-year absence, New Orleans (86-76) who boasted one of the top pitching staffs in the east and offensice sparkplug Jorge Sanchez (.322, 40 HR, 115 RBI + 31 SB) were their nearest challengers. Tampa Bay (84-78) who’s powerful Juan Santos (.289, 41 HR, 107 RBI) led offense (204 HR) once again carried the team, never-the-less finished third, whilst Miami slumped to a franchise worst 61-101 record despite another strong season from 1B Brian Watson (268, 33 HR, 114 RBI).
