Week 6 – April 12 – Draft Pool Released
The league office has released the list of players for the first-year player draft and speculation is already beginning about who will end up as the first pick. The list has been posted under the transaction section of the BNN site and will be there for the next 30 days leading up to draft day.
The early favorites to be high picks are the following:
1. Charlie Condon, a 20-year-old 3B out of college.
2. Hagen Smith, 20-year-old LHP out of college.

3. J.J. Wetherholt, 21-year-old 2B out of college.

4. Vance Honeycutt, 20-year-old CF out of college.
5. Peyton Stovall, 21-year-old 1B out of college.

6. Konnor Griffin, 17-year-old RF out of high school.
7. Travis Bazzana, 21-year-old 2B out of college.
8. Bryce Rainer, 18-year-old SS out of high school.
9. Carson Benge, 21-year-old RF out of college.

10. JD Dix, 18-year-old SS out of high school.
Of these early picks, there are four that I like and keep on my shortlist. They are Hagan Smith, J.J. Wetherholt, Peyton Stovall, and Carson Benge. I think we need to focus on college guys to get them into our minor league system quickly and develop them up to the big leagues sooner. There are some promising high school prospects, but I just don’t want to pay a high premium for an eventual bust. I’ll take some risk, but that’s too much for us right now.
Of the earlier drafts that I had scouted, I’ve culled out those I’m still interested in and shortlisted. They are RF Braden Montgomery, CF Will Taylor, LF Ian Petrutz, C Cade Arrambide, and LF Jac Caglianone.
I’ll sit down with the front office soon and decide on our strategy for this year’s draft. Honestly, may just pick the best guys available regardless of position, that’s affordable for us and have decent character and positive attributes. I don’t mind a few that may be less than ideal in a couple of areas, but I just want to avoid the ones with attitude. That disrupts a clubhouse, no matter how good they are.
We’ve already got that in Jordan Lyles and we’re paying him plenty, so don’t want to throw more money there at the risk of him ruining a season cause he’s got attitude.
