July 20-21, 2039: vs Boston (2)
The Rays bounced back to take both games of their mini-series with the Red Sox and opened up a double-digit lead in the AL East again.
The opener was over pretty much before it got going as the Rays scored 6 times in the opening frame and routed Boston 10-3. Billy Doughty's 3-run homer (#16) capped the big inning and he knocked in another later to give him a 4-ribbie day. Jeremy Begley (#25) and Tony Fisher (#20) added solo homers in the 6th and Sergio Espinoza (6-0) cruised to another win at 6.2 5 1 1 2 6.
The second game was a heavier lift but the Rays prevailed thanks to a brilliant outing from Ruben Cerrillo as they got by Boston 3-1. The lefty, who was near unhittable in April and May, had been more erratic lately but was in command today, nearly going the distance at 8.1 5 1 1 0 7 to improve to 8-6, 3.13. Walt Kelly got the final two outs for save #19 after Cerrillo gave up a one-out double in the 9th. A pair of runs in the 3rd were the difference with Justin Blackwell's RBI single the decider.
Team record: 63-34. Next up: A proper 3-game series for a change at home against Baltimore.
