Rule 5 Draft Trades & 42-man Changes

The Royals had a December of roster churn but that didn’t include a single trade, which had been a hallmark of Stewart’s reign.

However, before all the departures there was an arrival through free agency, as the Royals reunited with 1B Gilberto Matos. A one-year, $2.92m deal was agreed to bring the wrecked INF back to Kansas City, although it remains to be seen where he will fit into the loaded Royals INF.

Five pitchers and LF Jon Garrison were designated for assignment to make room for the new crop of Rule 5 eligible prospects. All but C.J. Binkle were claimed, a poor return for the Royals for some contributing players such as Danny Mueller and Steve Campista.

The Royals still lost two players in the Rule 5 Draft, 2046 1st rounder Jon Dismore and 2045 Trade Acquisition Juan Armenteros. Neither were likely long term options for the Royals although Dinsmore was due a shot, having been next man up on several occasions in 2050.

The Dodgers won the race to sign the stand out International Free Agent, penning Santiago Castro to a 4-year, $124m contract. They doubled down by signing T.J. Nooks to a 7-years, $278.5m contract to give them the best 1-2 punch in the league. J.J. Tjepkema’s quest for 10 will take place in Atlanta after he signed a two-year, $70m contract, the second of which is a vesting option after 180 IP.
