It's all in the degree. Fist-punching the air is natural, despite its connotation. Nobody gets insulted (except Ken and Karen perhaps) when a winner lifts his or her arms in the air in exultation.
But taking an obvious and recent example that easily comes to mind of stuff that is insulting was Haliburton's choking gesture after his amazing shot. Instead of exulting, he was insulting. Sure, the fans are probably all over his case before then, but two wrongs don't make a right. Haliburton was saying that the Knicks were chokers. Rather insulting, I would say.
And no one will ever convince me that having some concern for the feelings of others is not a good thing. Today, saying so sounds incredibly namby-pamby but it's core to having a good society and common bonds.
