You can look at league statistics in game to check what type of players are doing the best in your league. I like using the player search and compare, to see which players in the league have the best batting, pitching, and defense to see where things can improve. I've been away for some years, thus had some nasty shocks too. Like is BABIP a thing now and what does it do in the simulation (still don't know). I'll never stop complaining about my 100 rated Hack Wilson either... like others have said overall ratings are in many cases misleading and sometimes grossly.
I started 4 weeks late and was behind the curve so I started with a meme team for fun and went from there. You can sell unused or bad cards in the auction house for points to buy better cards or risk luck on card packs.
The frustration is understandable, it is pay to win and not a lot of info if any is provided about mechanics. It's safe to assume all those PT billionaires are in the topmost leagues by now so most competition in the lower leagues is probably free to play. It is what it is but once you figure out the profiles of good players you'll improve.
