The save with the error importing players, did you move the draft around at all in it? One option that can prevent players from importing is if you run a draft in, say, November 1984, and then move the draft to June, then the June 1985 draft will attempt to load the same players.
Another option you can check is what historical year is set in your save. If you go to the league settings, the historical tab, and make sure that the year listed there is the correct year for your game. If for some reason the league year got reset back to 1983 or 1984 or something, then the game would try to reload those year's players.
