Game 89: Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees
Ouch, this one was brutal for the visitors. On the day, the New York Yankees (49-42) jumped out to an early lead, tacked on additional runs, and cruised to a 15 to 4 victory over the visiting Boston Red Sox (49-40).
Taking the mound for the Yankees was Marcus Stroman (4-5) and he did not disappoint. In picking up the win, Stroman permitted 3 earned runs on 9 hits while striking out 5 in 8 2/3 innings of work; Game Score 59. Chase Hampton covered the final 1/3 inning but was tagged for 1 earned run on 2 hits and 1 walk. With the offense firing on all cylinders, there were several noteworthy performances, including Austin Wells (3 for 4, Double, 2 Homeruns, 2 Runs, 6 RBI, Walk), Anthony Rizzo (2 for 5, 2 Homeruns, 2 Runs, 4 RBI), Aaron Judge (3 for 4, Double, Homerun, 2 Runs, 2 RBI, Walk), and DJ LeMahieu (3 for 5, 2 Runs, RBI).
Conversely, the pitching for Boston was rather dreadful. Starter Brayan Bello (10-7) lasted just 2/3 of an inning, as he was rocked for 6 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks; Game Score 19. Relievers Garrett Cleavinger (4 earned runs on 4 hits and 1 walk in 2 2/3 innings), Isiah Campbell (4 earned runs on 3 hits and 2 walks in 1 inning), and Justin Slaten (1 earned run on 2 hits and 2 walks in 2 2/3 innings) were horribly ineffective today. Joely Rodriguez pitched the final inning in a scoreless appearance. Aside from the brutal pitching, the offense had its moments, led by Ceddanne Rafaela (3 for 4, 2 RBI), Tyler O'Neill (1 for 4, Homerun, Run, RBI), Marcelo Mayer (2 for 4, Triple, Run, RBI), and Rafael Devers (2 for 4, Double).
Player of the Game: Austin Wells
AL East Standings: 1st Place, 1 Game Lead
