The Red Sox went 16-12 and were tied for first for a while, but it was the Chicago White Sox who ruled this month in the AL. Altogether, the Pale Hose went 19-9 to pull 4 games ahead of Boston with the best record in the big leagues. Cleveland went 17-12, but remains 5 games back. Detroit lost last month's AL Pitcher of the Month,
Rich Leighton, for the season with a torn ligament in his elbow. That prompted them to promote 23-year-old
"Buckshot" Beck to the starting rotation. Beck was just signed this year and he looks like he has a great future.
The Giants maintained their lead in the NL despite going just 13-16 on the month. Luckily for them, the Reds also struggled at 12-16. The Cubs are now in 2nd Place after a 16-11 month.
Batters of the Month:
AL -
Michael Wrightson, 1B, Boston Red Sox - He hit .376 with 34 RBI, 19 runs scored and 5 home runs! That was one of the best months for a batter in league history! After just 2 months, he has 8 home runs - half of the major league record. The AL record is just 12.
NL -
"Butterball" Klehammer, C, Cincinnati Reds - He hit .400 with 19 RBI and 13 runs scored.
Pitchers of the Month:
