World Series Game 1 Victory for Joss and Washington
The stakes were high. Addie Joss was ready.
The right-hander turned in a performance for the ages at American League Park, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Washington Senators to victory in Game 1 of the World Series. Joss held the New York Giants to 3 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 2. The win got the best-of-7 series off to a good start for Washington, which now leads 1-0.
Joss was brilliant for Washington. The right-hander went the distance, shutting out the Giants on just 3 hits.
"We're happy," Joss told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at American League Park in Washington.

Giants Even With Senators After Extra-Innings Win
The New York Giants went the distance and then some at American League Park to drag themselves back into a tie with the Washington Senators.
It took 10 innings to settle Game 2 of the World Series, but New York eventually took the 5-4 win behind the efforts of pitcher Al Orth. Orth threw 8.0 innings allowing 4 runs to aid the New York cause. The clubs are now tied 1-1 in their best-of-7 series.
The most important at-bat for New York came in the top of the tenth inning, when catcher Frank Bowerman stroked a first pitch screwball to left-center for a run-scoring single, putting New York up, 5-4.
"Every team in baseball loses," Senators manager Justin Moorman said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back."
Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at the Polo Grounds in New York.

The Senators could never get a bead on the right-handed Taylor, who threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball. The Giants now hold a 2-1 in the best-of-7 series.
The game was at a stalemate until second baseman Danny Murphy came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Washington pitcher Frosty Thomas, he hit a 0-1 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting New York on top, 3-2.
"We lost," Washington manager Justin Moorman said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over."

When the games really matter, the New York Giants put on their best show, beating the Washington Senators by a final score of 1-0. Christy Mathewson threw 10.0 innings of shutout ball. New York now leads Washington 3-1 in the best-of-7 affair.
The game was still up for grabs in the bottom of the tenth. With no one out, Mathewson hit a curveball from Addie Joss for a run-scoring single. The Giants, in dramatic fashion, had a walk-off win.
Said Mathewson: "It's just one win, but it feels like more when you outlast a tough opponent."
