PAIR OF PIONEER BATSMEN WITH 5 HITS IN SCRANTON
HUNT & TAGGART REEL OFF FIVE HITS EACH IN DOUBLE-DIGIT VICTORY
SCRANTON, PENN. (July 11, 1872) – An eleven-run 8th inning was the difference between extra innings and a lopsided finish in Pennsylvania, as Pioneer’s big rally pushed them to four games over .500:
During the decisive rally Pioneer struck seven base hits and took advantage of seven Scranton fielding errors to turn what was an 8-8 game into a 19-8 rout.
There were two standout stars on the afternoon for Pioneer: first-year team members Ralph Hunt & Elwood Taggart.• Ralph Hunt (1B): 5/7 (all 1B), 2 R, 3 RBI, SB
• Elwood Taggart (CF): 5/6 (all 1B), 3 R, 5 RBI The late rally was much-needed as the win kept Pioneer tied for 2nd place in the Inland Championship with Reading, with both teams four games behind Susquehanna.
