July 22-24, 2033: vs NY Yankees (3)
Transaction: We decided to upgrade the backup catcher position, optioning Cade Arrambide to Durham and recalling Jalen Lowe, our 2nd-round pick in 2028 who was having a nice season (264/311/426) with 8 homers for the Bulls and boasts 50 contact/55 power/55 defense ratings.
Game 1: 7-6 W. WP-Vargas (4-1). S-R.Rodriguez (25). Starter-Lennon (4 9 6 6 1 2). HR-Y.Alvarez (13), Haro (13). What a game. The Yankees led 3-0 after 1 and 6-3 into the 6th before the Rays mounted an inspiring comeback. After getting it back to 6-5, Haro belted a 2-run homer off a lefty in the bottom of the 8th to give Tampa Bay the critical win. Yordan was 3-4 with his 2-run homer as well.
Game 2: 7-4 W. WP-Fragoso (3-4, 6 4 3 3 1 5). S-Ogando (4). HR-Rutschman (18). Another big win for the Rays as they raced out to a 7-0 lead behind Rutschman's 3-run homer and fine pitching from Fragoso in his return to the rotation. He loaded the bases with nobody out in the 7th before giving way to Stevenson, who gave up a grand slam to let NY back in it but the pen held from there.
Game 3: 5-4 W. WP-R.Rodriguez (3-2). Starter-Stone (6 3 1 1 2 9). HR-Cedillos (5). The Rays completed the sweep of the Yankees in thrilling fashion when Cedillos' walk-off homer with 2 out in the 9th broke a 4-4 tie and moved Tampa Bay to within 1 1/2 of New York in the division and 2 ahead of the White Sox for WC1. Stone was brilliant and Yordan was 2-4 with a pair of RBI doubles to give them a 4-1 lead but Vargas blew it in the 7th before Cedillos bailed him out.
Team record: 60-40. Next up: 3 games in Minnesota.
