That's a funny thing about beards. It's not about the length; I think it's about whether it looks like it's tended to once in a while.
I thought it was about whether it's growing sideways that bothers people, too, but it can be done if the grower has the proper style. Like this guy; he looks like he's wearing a lion's mane, and it works:
