June 16-18, 2056: at NY Yankees (3)
Game 1: Rays were never competitive in this one despite starting their ace Dave Rose as they fell 9-4 to the Yankees. Rose (7-3) got his whiffs but was otherwise knocked around at 5 7 5 5 1 7 and the bullpen gave up 4 more to make it 9-0 before they scored 4 in the 9th including a 3-run Paul Mayes homer (#2).
Game 2: The opposite of yesterday's game as Elijah Whitaker and three relievers combined on a 6-hit shutout as Tampa Bay beat New York 5-0. Whitaker (4-4) was outstanding at 6.1 4 0 0 0 6 and he got much of his support from Dantel Chinchilla, who had an early 2-run double and added an RBI single with Jose Lozada going 3-5 with 2 RBI and 2 steals.
Game 3: The Rays took the rubber game of the series from New York 8-4. Steve Swords improved to a perfect 7-0 despite going a less-than-perfect 6.1 4 4 4 3 8 although his line was marred by the bullpen allowing two runners he left on to score. Paul Mayes had a big game, driving in 4 including a bases-clearing double in the 8th that broke open a 5-4 game, and Ezequiel Avalos had 3 hits including a solo homer (#15). Another rookie, Vinny Colon, added a solo shot of his own (#5).
Team record: 43-29. We stayed 2 behind Baltimore and now return home to play 3 against Austin.
