Traded 24-year old minor league 1B Juan Monrroy and 23-year old 2B Jimmy Monroe to the Boston Red Sox, getting 26-year old RF Mike Connelly, 17-year old minor league LF David Amaya, and $1,000,000 in cash in return.
Placed LF Mike Connelly on the active roster.
Two major moves in July as the Royals lose Min-ho Kim for the rest of the regular season (and maybe the playoffs) to a herniated disk while they bolster their outfield with a trade deadline deal with the Red Sox.
Mike Connolly is a former Rookie of the Year and 2038 All Star heading into his arbitration years. The Royals give up AAAA Jimmy Monroe and potential AAAA prospect Juan Monrroy. In addition to Connolly, the Royals pick up 2037 International Amateur David Amaya, a plus plus contact outfielder who is likely trade bait rather than the future of the Royals unless he shows some power potential in the near future.
Minor Leagues
B.J. Heaton of Omaha had an award-winning July as he took home the International League Pitcher of the Month award.
"He told me once people used to make fun of the way he pitches," Heaton's pitching coach told reporters. "There wasn't anybody laughing in July except for B.J.."
Heaton was all business when he took the mound though, collecting a 4-0 record in 5 starts. He struck out 39 batters in 36.2 innings and kept opponents to a .190 batting average.
This season, Heaton has 12 wins and 2 losses and a 3.24 ERA.
July was a very productive month for Jorge Medrano, and today the Kansas City (DSL) shortstop was rewarded with the Dominican Rookie League Batter of the Month honors.
He clobbered enemy hurlers for a .456 average, 9 home runs, and 40 RBIs and scored 40 runs.
Medrano is hitting at a .426 mark this season. His stats show 14 home runs, 64 RBIs and 63 runs scored. He has played 42 games for the Royals Stewart.
The Pitcher of the Month Award has been selected and the Dominican Rookie League winner is Kansas City (DSL) relief specialist, Frank Ramirez. For his fine work in July he has been named the league's foremost pitcher.
During the month, he excelled with 1 save in 2 save opportunities, a 1.61 ERA and 5 wins and no losses. In 22.1 innings Ramirez struck out 24 and gave up 23 hits and 16 walks.
So far this season, in 10 relief appearances Ramirez has compiled an ERA of 3.25. He has pitched 27.2 innings, struck out 29, walked 21 and registered 1 save.
