Insuring performers is standard practice. (Robert Downey, Jr.'s comeback almost didn't happen because after being in prison he couldn't get a completion bond to do Kiss Kiss, Bang, Bang, until Val Kilmer bought he bond for him, because he wanted RDJ in the role and was willing to take the risk that Downey might fall off the wagon and default.)

also Linsay Lohan was supposed to star in a Linda Lovelace biopic but was fired because she could no longer be insured. This happened during her longest jail stint. Also RDJ did lose out on at least one role along with Winnona Ryder but in their cases its probably a good thing they did with it being a Woody Allen movie
