June 1-3, 2038: vs NY Yankees (3)
The Rays played a trio of one-run games with the Yankees and took two of them as they've done all year. As a result they're now 6 games up on New York in the AL East.
Transaction: Luis Berumen went on the 10-day IL with his concussion and will miss close to a month. Up from Durham to take his place is rookie OF Danny Arevalo, acquired this past winter from Oakland along with reliever Moises Baca for Duk-yoon Ko. Rated 65 contact and 55 power Arevalo has found the International League no problem, hitting 312/360/588 with 11 homers and the lefty swinger will platoon with Alex Rivas.
Welcome to the big leagues, Danny Arevalo. The rookie OF made his MLB debut a memorable one by singling in the winning run in the 7th to cap a 2-4 day and give the Rays a 2-1 win over the Yankees. Otherwise the story of the game was the return to form of Danny Morales (6-4) who went 8 5 1 1 0 8 in by far his best start of a mediocre season to date with his ERA still a bloated 5.15 after today's gem. Tony Alicea had a 1-2-3 9th with a pair of whiffs for his 16th save.
The Rays had their chances to win the second game but failed to take advantage of them and eventually dropped a 4-3 decision to the Yankees in 13 innings at the Trop. Jon Coggin (0-2) succumbed to a bout of wildness in that last inning, walking 3 including a man with the bases loaded to force home the winning run. Jake Bridgewater turned in a good start at 6 5 2 2 3 4 and Danny Charlton had a 2-run double but they couldn't cash in a leadoff double in the bottom of the 9th and a couple of men on the 11th and paid for it.
The headline in the Tampa Bay Times the day after the finale was "BADA BING!" as backup catcher Art Bing picked a great time to hit his first homer of the year, a walk-off solo shot leading off the bottom of the 9th to give the Rays a 5-4 win in the rubber game of the series. Bing's blast saved a day that saw the Rays squander 3-1 and 4-3 leads and made sure they wouldn't lose a game with a dominant Gabe Bryant performance (6 3 3 3 0 10). Stan LeVea gave up a homer in the 7th to lose the lead and Tony Alicea (2-2) ended up with the win. Earlier they got a 2-run homer from Jeremy Begley (#11) and a solo shot from Danny Rodriguez (#9).
Team record: 36-18. Next up: Oakland visits for 3 games as the homestand continues.
