I don't think the check box does a recalc, it just locks whatever values are loaded in. This is handy for wanting to statistically re-create a specific season in your current save, like want your league to go HR crazy? Load late 90s values. The handicap here is the players in your league may not be homer run hitters, it might be more of a 'contact era'. This will skew results as it is statistically difficult for players with those ratings to produce those league totals. Also, there is more potential for players to put up ridiculous numbers, like a mediocre power hitter might all of a sudden put up ridiculous HR numbers because we are counting on his ratings to reach our league totals.
Auto recalc looks at the ratings of the players in the league at that specific moment and translates the ratings into values (1B, 2B, HR, BB). Those values are then totaled and weighed vs historical MLB totals on the league options page. When the recalc occurs, those weights are taken into consideration as a modifier to produce totals more in line with any MLB season. I'm not sure if there is too much of a handicap in this method as there was in locking the totals other than sometimes your see some rather harsh swings in stats year to year across the board (not limited to 1 player).
In the majors, I've found it beneficial statistically to force an auto-recalc in the preseason or on Opening Day if you can. This gives me totals based on the players on rosters at that moment which has produced better results.
In the minors I've always let the engine recalc the totals and I don't seem to have any complaints except sometimes you see minor league teams do really, really awful. Like 2-92 or 0-44 type records, human and cpu teams.
Anyway, this is kind of what I've sussed, I'm not sure if I'm missing anything or misrepresenting anything but after 20 years, running and playing in multiple online leagues, beta testing and all, this is the best I can tell.
