Pennant Race Updates
American League East
The 1969 Pirates have left everyone in the division in their wake since the end of spring. The 1999 White Sox had a terrible June Swoon as the help around star Frank Thomas hasnt come from anywhere. Bob Veale has won 18 games for the Bucs with 198 K while Roberto Clemente looks as good as ever with 93 RBI. The 1975 Royals saw George Brett finally get hot and is now batting .310 but Royals bats overall could not keep them in the race. The Pirates now have their sights clear on the pennant.
American League West
The best and only race still remaining it would seem in season 4. The 1919 White Sox turned the corner and started playing great ball again overtaking the 2013 DBacks but then falling off late in August to now sit 2.5 games back. Happy Felsch has picked up the slack for a slumping Joe Jackson while Lefty Williams has 19 wins. First in home runs and first in relief pitching the Arizona teams seems determined to finish strong knowing very well the legend of their opponents. Can the Sox stand up to the late season pressure and avoid missing their chance at redemption as a club. The tension should be high in September with the teams meeting three more times at Comiskey in the final week. The 2002 Padres still sit a relatively distant 8.5 games back in third.
National League East
It has been the 2018 Mets all season long and there is no reason to dou t that they will finish the job with a 9.5 game lead over Pittsburgh. Mets pitching has been good with Jacob DeGrom having 19 wins in a healthy 249 innings pitched. Seth Lugo has 36 saves and the Mets are 44-26 at home. The 2015 Pirates are playing a bit better but it is coming much too late. The team found its stroke in August but Gerrit Cole sits at a shocking 10-19 with a 4.82 ERA. The Mets have lead this division since April 17th and now also have their eyes focused on the pennant.
National League West
The 1924 Giants sure know how to turn it on and finish strong. John McGraw lead his team from what was a division race to a sort of runaway from the 1944 Cubs as New York won 19 games in August. The Cubs who were the darlings of the season and leading the race at the all-star break couldn't back up player of the month Andy Pafko and fell victim to some rough patch pitching. Chicago still has the second best record in baseball but it doesn't look like it will be enough. Hack Wilson continues to tear through the league with 38 HR and 105 RBI while Art Nehf has won 18 games and Kent Greenfield was won 17 throwing in 252 innings. The 1924 Giants are likely to be the only team to win 100 this season.
