As someone who has played Manager only since OOTP18, the best advice I can give you is to not try to make any sense of anything and just focus on the day to day portion of your team. While the mode is available, there is no true built in logic to handle things in a way that would make sense progression-wise for the Manager. There are no possible interactions with the GM that would make the mode more immersive and definitely more realistic. You don't get any input on anything.
But...as someone already pointed it out, it is the most challenging way to play the game and I could never go back to being a GM with 2 873 433 house rules to try and make the game more challenging.
I just hope they will beef up the mode in the future, but will not be holding my breath as we are in the very vast minority of players that enjoy playing the game this way.
