Nuka News Update

Reporting on the NWL, APL, NWLR, and BBL Leagues

by Evan Guy

1 July 2312

Quantum, Cherry Continue to Lead

Another month of the NWL is now complete, and the Quantum Nukalurks and Cherry Ghoulrillas continue to lead their divisions in the race for the 2312 Nuka Series. Both teams were the preseason favorites to win their divisions.

The Nukalurks are still dominating on defense, allowing a league-low 182 runs with the best Starter ERA (3.56) and Bullpen ERA (3.47). SP Cameron Biehler (10-1, 1.88) has been dominant all season, and CL Christiansen Mandelbrot (2 SV, 1.50) has been good in his new role with regular CL Tummy Urchin (18 SV, 4.71) out for the season.

Cherry has been the NWL's top offensive team, leading in runs scored (255) along with most other categories. LF Everlast Barron (.385/14/33) has stood out the most, with contributions from RF Genius Jerry Kordic (.359/9/35/7 SB), 1B Swamp Dantin (.377/7/32), and 2B Tick Garrett (.340/8/41).

The NWL is on its All-Star break, so let's give that story, too: How would you like to manage a team with more star players than you can play? It wouldn't be an easy chore. That's the dilemma facing the two managers at the annual Nuka World League All-Star classic -- how to get all the talented All-Stars in the game. But it's a joy for the fans -- to see all their favorite stars on one field at the same time.

Here are the official All-Star rosters:

For players of the month, Quantum Nukalurks fans believe they've got a talented young star in Jukie Robbins.

He did nothing to dissuade that notion in June, as he hit .441 with 3 home runs, 14 RBIs and 28 runs scored.

The end result was the right fielder being named the Nuka World League Batter of the Month.

Looking at his stats this year, Robbins has compiled a .396 batting average, while hitting 4 home runs and driving in 31 runs. He has played in 48 games and scored 42 runs.

In June, when the name of Shoestring Caravelli appeared on the Orange lineup card it was a virtual lock on a victory. He started 6 times and chalked up 5 wins and no losses. With those stats it was also a virtual lock that he would be named the Nuka World League Pitcher of the Month.

Caravelli shackled opposing batters on 39 base hits and a .271 batting average. He rang up 23 strikeouts in 38.2 innings of work, surrendered 10 walks and fashioned a sparkling 2.33 ERA.

This season, Caravelli has 6 wins and 2 losses and a 3.21 ERA.

Everlast Barron of the Cherry Ghoulrillas has been chosen the top Rookie in the Nuka World League.

In June he racked up 37 hits, 10 home runs, 24 RBIs and 23 runs scored. He hit .359 with a .374 OBP.

Barron is batting .385 with 14 home runs and 33 RBIs this season.

In the Amusement Park League, the Bradberton Disciples and Nuka Town Operators have slight leads. The Operators have the APL's top record at 18-12, while the Kiddie Kingdom Cappies are the worst team at 12-18, showing that the league is close from top to bottom.

Fisher Ryba put together a good June to earn the Amusement Park League Batter of the Month prize. A virtual unknown, he made the most of his chance to prove to Bradberton officials that he belongs on the big league roster.

The Disciples shortstop posted a .339 batting average with 9 home runs, 20 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

Bighair Harrington of Grandchester excelled on the mound in June with a 3-1 record and was named the Pitcher of the Month in the Amusement Park League.

Harrington restricted opposing batters to 54 base hits and a .274 batting average. He rang up 32 strikeouts in 51 innings of work, surrendered 11 walks, and fashioned a 2.82 ERA.

We have now found out this is the last season of the NWLRL, which will fold following the season. Currently, the Nuka Jolly Elves and Hubologist Camp Barkers are in control of their divisions.

Mox Burtolemey may be much younger than other hitters in the NWL Rookie League, but he performed like a seasoned veteran in June to win the Batter of the Month award.

The 18-year-old Dunmore left fielder hit .333 with 10 home runs, 23 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

The Pitcher of the Month Award has been announced and the NWL Rookie League winner is Northpoint Reservoir hurler, Blasphemy Perez. For his fine efforts in June he has been named the league's #1 pitcher.

During the month, Perez excelled with a 1.78 ERA and 2 wins and no losses. In 25.1 innings he struck out 29 and gave up 17 hits and 19 walks.

Also in its final year, at least in this iteration, the Bradberton Boys League season is now final. We have reported the final regular season standings below.

A celebratory mood filled the air as the Fizztop Mountain Conquerors closed out the season with a 10-9 victory over the Forest Park Brahmiluffs at The Brahm Pasture at Springfield to capture the Bradberton Boys Series, 2-1.

Giving the Brahmiluffs credit for a hard-fought series, Conquerors players said they believed throughout the postseason that their "destiny" was to be crowned Bradberton Boys League champions.

"We felt like this was our year all season long," said second baseman Bucket Corbett, who was named series MVP. "It was our destiny to win it and we did."

It was the 6th in franchise history. During the West Division regular season Fizztop Mountain put up a 28-15 record and finished first.

"They're the champions and they deserve it," said a dejected Forest Park manager Bugs Villar. "We played good ball, they just played better than us."

With back-to-back championships for the third time in BBL history, the Conquerors finish as the all-time best BBL team. We plan to feature the all-time bests for this league later, but for now, let's name the BBL's two all-time best players: Ol Sugartop's 1B Rush Clovis and mad Mulligan's SP Rude Rube Waddell.

Clovis, the #1 overall pick in the SPA's 2305 Rookie Draft, finished his BBL career tops in average (.371), OBP (.452), SLG (.966), OPS (1.417), hits (216), total bases (562), home runs (108), RBI (180), and WAR (13.51).

Waddell was the #1 overall pick in the 2310 Rookie Draft. He is the BBL's all-time leader in wins (16), IP (217.0), and WAR (9.81).

Far Harbor Maintains Lead, Dalton Farm-National Park Tied

Last month, both the Dalton Farm Fog Crawlers and Far Harbor Ghoul Whales were in charge of the Fog and Harbor divisions, respectively. While the Ghoul Whales have maintained their lead, up four games over Cranberry Island, the Fog Crawlers have faded to fall into a tie with National Park.

No team in the Vim! League seems particularly dominant. If we look at runs scored and allowed only, the top offensive team is Cranberry Island (282), which dominated in most offensive categories but is dead last in runs allowed (291), and the top pitching team is Eden Meadows (219), which is dead last in most offensive categories, including runs scored (191).

Not known for his offensive prowess, Mack Triggerfinger set the league afire in June and took home the Vim! League Batter of the Month award.

The Cranberry Island right fielder posted a steady .394 batting average, 8 home runs, 25 RBIs and 27 runs.

For the year, Triggerfinger is batting .379 with 14 home runs, 46 RBIs and 49 runs scored.

In June, the elite pitcher in the Vim! League was Riff Tamson, thanks to some great numbers coming out of the bullpen.

The Grand Hotel relief specialist posted a 4-0 mark and an ERA of 1.05 in 25.2 innings with 26 strikeouts and 5 saves in 5 save opportunities.

This season, Tamson has crafted a 4-4 won-lost mark, pitched in 10 relief appearances and rung up 5 saves. He has a 4.14 ERA and has allowed 66 hits over his 54.1 innings of work, struck out 42 batters and walked 14.

Bryce Shea earned June's Rookie of the Month honors in the Vim! League for last month's performance. The boyish Echo Lake first baseman might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Shea hit .368 with 9 home runs, 23 RBIs and 16 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Shea is batting .339 this season in 46 games with 14 home runs, 39 RBIs and 29 runs scored. He has 64 hits in 189 at-bats.

It is not an easy task to pick the best players for the annual baseball classic -- the All-Star Game. It is not possible to please everybody. Whether we agree or not, they have been chosen ... and here they are. The rosters for this year's Vim! League All-Star Game have been announced.

The VIML manager conceded that not every deserving player is rewarded with a spot on the roster. "Every year," he said, "someone is disappointed to be left out. This year's no different -- too many good players, not enough roster spots."

In the MDIL, the Cliff's Edge Actors and Rayburn Point Patcheyes are division leaders by two and three games, respectively. The Actors have been the best pitching team, allowing just 103 runs in 30 games so far. The Patcheye have been outscored on the season, 141-143, but still are tied for the MDIL's best record.

Legend Jurenka is not used to being associated with Batter of the Month-caliber players, but today the Southwest Harbor first baseman joined that select company when the Mount Desert Island League announced the results of June's voting.

Jurenka totaled 9 hits, 1 walk, 4 home runs, 11 RBIs and 5 runs scored last month to put together a .750 batting average and .769 on-base percentage.

The best pitcher this past month in the Mount Desert Island League was Robber Mega of the Oceanarium Oceanics. He really razzle-dazzled league hitters, finishing June with a standout 3-0 record and 1.93 ERA.

The Oceanics hurler made 4 starts and surrendered 32 hits in 32.2 innings. He struck out 18 and walked 11.

In the Vim! Rookie League, both divisions are tied. In the Western Atlantic Division, both the Rock Point Barnacles and Glowing Grove Brainiacs are tied at 18-12. In the Eastern Atlantic, there is a 17-13 tie between the Longfellow Pips and Huntress Island Ug-Qualtoths.

When Quadir Westwego stepped up to the plate in June he did it with confidence, and today he was honored with the VIM! Rookie League Batter of the Month award.

The young Longfellow right fielder posted a .493 batting average with 22 home runs, 41 RBIs and scored 29 runs. Westwego also worked pitchers for 8 walks to post a .553 on-base percentage.

June's top-rated pitcher was Tony the Natural Olguin of Longfellow Pips. He demoralized VIM! Rookie League hitters in posting a 3-0 record and captured the Pitcher of the Month award.

In 5 starts, Olguin limited opposing batters to a .276 average. He rang up 39 strikeouts in 33 innings of work, issued 14 walks, and crafted a 3.55 ERA.

In the final season of the Maine Youth Leagues before being transferred under control of the Commonwealth Baseball Organization, the Mount Desert Island Four winner was the Beaver Creek Bowlers and the Great Diamond Island League winner was the Echo Point Glowers.

It's party time in Echo Point. The confetti is flying and residents are smiling.

The Echo Point Glowers have reached the mountaintop, capturing the 2312 Maine Youth Series today. They defeated the Beaver Creek Bowlers 10-9 at Echo Point Park to officially wrap up the series 2-0.

Asked how it feels to be a champion, right fielder Naim Nagel was to the point.

"It feels great, like a million bucks. I'm so happy right now, not just for me but for all the guys," he said. "We put a lot of work into this and deserve to be champions."

The team is planning a victory parade and fan appreciation day later in the week. Echo Point finished the regular season 25-15 and claimed first place in the Great Diamond Island League.
